Membership News

ZWIN won the Community Service Award from the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce! Recording secretary Cindy Argentine nominated the group and highlighted the many ways ZWIN serves our community while fostering personal and professional development. Congratulations to our leadership and all our members for contributing to this achievement! Debbi and Kathy held up the trophy the group received at the annual banquet
to commemorate this.

Debbi and Kathy reminded us of the expectations we have for each member–invite, attend, and refer! “Your smile is your logo,” they mentioned, so we need to remember that as we invite others to join us. As for attendance, it’s a requirement to attend eight meetings or events per year. And don’t forget the power of a personal, hand-written note as a referral. Sending thanks and well-wishes to colleagues and clients is powerful. They also reviewed our theme for the year, which is Building Blocks for Business. Our program on apps and podcasts ties in to the several of these building blocks, including “branding” and “time and self.”

Cindy, Erica, and Nikole touched on updates with our communications. Cindy shared the results of the survey we took at our last meeting, which showed that many members are excited about what’s on our website (www.zionsvillewin.org) but are not visiting it as often as they’d like. We will post more links to updated content on our Facebook page, since many members are regularly on that platform.

Our group is also requesting volunteers to lead committees, including a greeter coordinator, raffle coordinator, photographer, and service co-chairs. Kimbra Naber has stepped up as Member Care Chair, Erin DeBrota as Newspaper/PR Chair, and Dawn Parker is continuing as Spotlight Speaker Chair.

Spotlight Speakers

Erica Carpenter of five thirty home. She runs a home decor and refurbished furniture boutique in Zionsville’s historic village on Main Street. The company is named for mile marker 530 on the Ohio River where she grew up. She and her family were “pickers” before that became a trend–locating discarded items and re-purposing them into fun and functional pieces. She loves being part of the community here. Stop by her store to find painted furniture, festive florals, antiques, and lots of local decor such as signs handpainted with “46077” and other Zionsville emblems and icons.

Tracy Ridings of USO Indiana. Tracy explained that USO stands for United Service Organizations, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that supports military members and families. The Indiana group receives no funding from the national organization. Indiana has the fourth largest National Guard in the country, so there are many people in the state affiliated with the military. Their main goal is to keep members of the military connected to home and family during their service. One of her favorite programs provides audio and video of parents reading books, which is a touching way for them to stay in touch with their children.

Dawn Parker, health coach. Dawn recently received her certification in functional medicine. She explained some of the differences between conventional and functional medicine. The latter focuses on using nutrition and lifestyle changes more than prescription pharmaceuticals. For example, a conventional practitioner might treat a patient suffering from heartburn with a PPI. A functional medicine practitioner would identify the underlying causes of the acid reflux, such as a nutritional deficiency, stress, or a food intolerance, and work with the client to correct those. Dawn works with many people who have issues such as digestive problems, cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, pain and inflammation, headaches, asthma, and hormonal conditions. She offers free 15-minute video consultations to new patients.

Upcoming Events

Our Spring Social will be on April 25 this year from 7-9 pm at Cobblestone. It will be a casual, relaxed event with appetizers and cocktails.
